Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Whale Rider (Polynesian Culture) Every other culture have their own traditions and they keep them alive as they are part of what gives them identity and their lives more meaning. Over the years, it is common place that traditions will change as different generation engage with the same. This is the case when it comes to the film Whale Rider. The film is a representation of the Maori people relative to their traditions and how they are changed with the coming in of the new generation. The Maori are part of the Polynesian people of what is currently New Zealand. Some of the main elements that are featured in the film are, the gender roles and leadership as part of the traditions that the Polynesians held. The film is about the Maori, who are a community that is looking for the male descendant of Paikea. The latter was a brave leader to the community, who had escaped death on the back of a whale and had come to lead them and would later be the one that restored the community and its traditions. The grandfather to Koro Pai had been waiting for the first born in the new generation who would be given the mandate of becoming the chief. However, it is unfortunate that the twin brother to Pai dies and the hope of a new leader goes with him. As mentioned above, the community only believed that the roles of a leader should always be passed on to a male.
