Florence Kelley uses the three rhetorical strategies: ethos, logs, and pathos to convey her message to her audience. The use of ethos helps to establish the writer’s credibility and expertise on the topic. Writers use pathos to connect to their audience emotionally and appeal to them. Logos involve statement of facts and data to show that the piece is based on facts. As an advocate for child labor laws and better working conditions for the working women, Kelley needed to use these tools to show that her information was credible and that she knew what she was doing, connect the audience to the suffering of the women and children, and to show the magnitude of the suffering.
Florence uses ethos by quoting several legislations that have restrictions on the ages of young people not allowed to work in the cotton mills at night and longer than eight hours.
