Research on Realism
In the 19 century, there was a remarkable transition in the art movement from Romanticism to realism. Becker and George (pp.3) opined that there is no conclusive definition of realism, which in some instances, is referred also to as naturalism. However, the element of truth is distinctive in realism. An article that appeared in Westminister Review of 1858 might provide a better description of realism that art is the depiction of reality and no deviation from the truth is allowed, with an exception only when the lie is inevitable in medium and nature. (Becker and George, pp.6). Realism became the bedrock of art and antithesis to falsism, but not idealism (Becker and George, pp.6) Realism has undergone tremendous growth and this is evidenced by profound impact literature and English. Realism is a multifaceted concept; one of the facets being the relation between literature and reality, or words and life. The realism history dates back to the 19th century in France and it emerged as a response to romanticism. The Romanticism movement seemed not to serve the fundamental interest at that time and people felt that it quite was exotic, artificial and appeared to be devoid of reality. Thus, realism was a reactionary art movement that was intended to bridge the gaps that were common in Romanticism. The paper will explore crucial perspectives about realism.
There is a range of literary realism; these include magical, social, Kitchen sink realism, psychological realism, Socialist, and naturalism. Magical realism sounds contradictory; how could reality mix magic? Magical realism features inmost artwork throughout the globe and is commonly pioneered by the Latin American authors. Magical realism narratives incorporate fantasies and dislocate boundaries of time, history, and space (Langdon, PP.14). It destroys the centrality of reality. The elements of magic and fantasy may put into question the concept of realism. However, magical realism is crucial because it offers an alternative opportunity for authors to challenge the existing traditions; it is a useful tool to chide those in the position of leadership, for example, government. Magical realism provides a platform through which the literature authors can advance feminist and political agenda, reflection of violence and trauma, and elucidation of post-structuralism expositions (Langdon, PP.14).
Social realism is an art style that is deployed in the presentation of plays, movies, or fiction. The art of social realism is grounded in reality. The artwork is presented with no or minimal alterations. Social realism is not decisively defined by history. An example of the social realist is Gustave Courbet who was a French painter in the 19th century. He had innovative ways of presenting his paintings, which delivered social communication. He was a bold artist who never shied away from sharing the alluring and ugly side of life through art.
