The Media Stereotype of a Terrorist
Media coverage of Islam-related issues changed especially after the events of September 11, 2001. Not only have the coverage of Islam increased particularly in news and entertainment but also the way in which Islam is framed by the media has changed as well. The American-led war on terrorism has increased the Islamophobia across the globe. The word terrorist evokes violence and also polarizes Islamic religion as whole .The word terrorism is causally used by news media to paint Islam as radical, demonizing Muslims in general (MediaSmarts). Before the terrorist attacks, Muslims or Islam, in general were not perceived as a threat to the society, but after the bombing in New York, the cultural beliefs, practices and traditional of Muslims have constantly been questioned by several nations. During the reporting of 9/11, most news media reports focused on Muslims, relating them to crime, security presenting a one-sided negative framework of Muslims. Terrorism is always directly related to Muslims, which causes a wave of negative and stereotyping of Muslims (MediaSmarts).
The Media Stereotyping of a Refugee
Most experts agree that immigration is becoming out of control in the UK. Immigrants are blamed for lack of jobs and other necessities like housing. As a result, harsh measures have been taken to stop the immigration (Nagarajan). This is a scapegoat to stereotype migrant groups. In the UK, media outlets often inflate or speculate about the number of refugees. Furthermore, Newspaper and Television images play into the dominant stereotype of a refugee portraying the young men and women as dangerous people who are a threat to the communities. The newspapers use negative connotation and hostile language like bogus or illegal when describing refugees. Currently, thousands of immigrants are moving into Europeans countries, a majority of them coming from Africa and the Middle-East region. There is much fear in the countries that some terrorist groups especially from the Muslim countries may enter the countries disguised as refugees (Nagarajan).
