Literature is a true reflection of the society; it mirrors the thoughts and actions of the society. A good work of literary art speaks about the important things in real life. It does not hide what people experience in life. Instead, it exposes the issues and complexities that real people face in real life. Literature acknowledges that social life is a blend of various complexities that affect the way people think and behave. The way people think and behave is a pure reflection of what they deeply desire. It is through a person’s actions that the society can know what is important in his or her life. Literature reveals, through various social institutions, the ideals and deep convictions that people believe in. For example, the relationship between family members is affected by the values that individuals in the family choose to adopt. In this respect, the core function of literature is to reveal the importance of people appreciating one another because different people attach significance to different things.

In Han Kang’s “The Vegetarian”, it is evident that the convictions and decisions of Yeong-hye are what defines her, and sets her apart from the rest of her family members. The novel is centered on the story of a young married lady whose radical convictions reveal the things that are most important to her. It is through her convictions that she makes her daily decisions about life and, consequently, these decisions affect the lives of those around her. Thus, the novel shows candidly that people go through real issues, and it is through the actions that they take that the reality of life is exposed. For example, in Han Kang’s “The Vegetarian”, Yeong-hye strongly believes that she is supposed to be a vegetarian and, thus chooses to stop taking meat and its products. This is a decision, though not understood clearly by her family, which affects the behavior that Yeong-hye chooses to adopt. By choosing to be a vegetarian, she is simply showing what is important to her life, and she expects her family members to appreciate the same.
