I am writing to express my concern over an article that was published by your paper, which was largely misleading. In the article you cited that, relative to American parenting approach, ‘Not under my roof’, is a firm stand that is crucial in bringing up children and moreover considering the topic on sex education. However, it should be accompanied by adequate by informative discussion on why teenage sex is dangerous. You rightly cited that the Dutch approach on the other hand is more open to dialogue which is important for teenagers.
It is agreeable that, there is a very subtle influence of the American stereotype against open sex discussion between the parents and the teenage children. Parents maintain a firm grip on that teenagers should not have sex, however very little information is given to the teenagers on the approach (Ottati and Renstrom). This approach is largely guided by the experiences that the parents had growing up, where teenage sex and sex education in general was a controversial topic.
In light of the sleepover question, I agree that, the logic behind it rides on better communication between the parents and the teenagers on controversial topics such as sex. Ideally the emotions that play a role in the discussion are largely based on the fact that, parents are being protective of the children, while teenagers would want to experiment with their feelings and surge of emotions that they feel as they mature into adults.
However I have a contentious issue concerning the author’s deliberate or otherwise omission of the dangers of STDs, HIV and AIDs in the discussion. Considering that the author is actually a professor, it is very disappointing that all she discusses in the article relates to teenagers being allowed to have sex. She completely disregards the dangers of teenage sex such, STDs and HIV/AIDS. Most parents are not worried of their children having sex, it is the consequences that they are worried about.
