Lessons from the saddest day in my life
The saddest event in my life was when my uncle suffered from cancer, and there was nothing I could do about his situation. My uncle was strong, masculine and very jovial with a broad smile on his face. He has white hair and radiant skin. He was very athletic and participated in outdoor activities like sports, fishing and rock climbing. One of his greatest attributes was his will, he had a strong will. He never let anything bring him down not even cancer.
The feeling was devastating. I remember one day I came from a football game and the minute I walked into the living room the atmosphere was not as usual. My aunt was quiet, and my uncle was upstairs in their bedroom. I inquired what the problem was, and my aunt told me to go upstairs and ask my uncle. At first, he hesitated but when he finally opened up, I was shaken, I could barely hold back my tears. I called my brother who was already aware of the situation.
Ever since that day I became very moody, I was always in a pensive mood. My uncle had been smoking for some time, and we all knew one day it would affect him. During this time I noticed my brother Dave was always not in the house, he started missing family dinner, and he could come late and leave early. One day I confronted him. With tears rolling down his cheek, Dave told me he feared for our uncle and was afraid of being around him and watch him suffer. We shared our concerns and decided we were not going to cave into the situation but rather let it build us.
During this time the only information about cancer that I had was that it was a fatal disease that very few people survived it. I embarked on research and read a lot of journals and cancer books. While the information suggested that people could survive cancer, I was still afraid, and I was not ready to lose my uncle.
One day I visited my uncle in the hospital, I was nervous, but I felt comfortable in the presence of my brother Dave. I saw an opportunity to ask the doctor question about cancer and possible treatments. We went through possible treatment with the doctor who was very much willing to help. One of the treatment was chemotherapy. The doctor also explained how cancer treatment destroys other organs in what is called side effects. However, what worried me most was the time I had to wait to see whether the treatment that my uncle was re...
