The Imagery in "Kubla Khan"
The poem gives a description of Xanadu. Xanadu was the palace of Kubla Khan. This was an emperor of Mondol and grandson to Genghis Khan. The speaker in the poem describes the setting of the palace which in this case is referred to as a “pleasure dome”. He talks about a river which passes across some caves which are underground towards the sea. Additionally, he highlights the fertile field which surrounds the palace. The sea adjacent is covered with trees which smell good, streams and gorgeous forests. The poem was written after a dream. It is based on the small images he remembered after he had the dream. The poem also concerns the fact that the speaker is unable to remember the whole dream.
