Up until the beginning of the 19th century, Ireland was majorly ruled by the Anglican Church. The majority, Presbyterian, other non-Anglican Protestants and catholic group were put under a leash in the inhumane penal laws imposed on at the time. Moody et.al (2012) asserts that the occurrence of both the French revolution and the American war of independence instigated the Irish rebellion of 1798 through the Society of United Irishmen, a-cross-of-many-religions-group.
William Pitt, the prime minister at the time, attempted to thwart threats of any Irish support that by the French fostering the Acts of union but did not manage to get catholic emancipation as part of the deal. This brought an end to Irish independence as the solution to Ireland. England was brought under a merger by the parliament of the United Kingdom legislation in the parliaments of both kingdoms (Duffy 45-47).
