The world is constantly changing with the advent of technology, as more gadgets to the consumers. The consumer culture is one that has revolutionized the way that people think and act. In the not so distant past, research involved going to the library and reading physical books for hours on end trying to find all the information that one needs for their project. Today, it is no longer the case, as the digital libraries have completely overrun the physical ones. The internet has also done away with the need to go to the library in the first place (Hari line 6). There is an element of ease that has been introduced in the literal world, where access to information is much easier than it ever was in the past. The most important aspect that comes out from the ease of acquiring information is that, people no longer have the concentration to build on their knowledge much like it was the case in the past. For persons that did not have the distraction associated with a wired environment, where their phones and other gadgetry are taking their attention from the books, the accumulation of knowledge was profound. With the level of distraction and the content generated by through the social websites, people have lost the true element of gaining knowledge and are more concerned with social events and experiences (Hari line 34).
The nightmare of the twentieth century was that most the books that came out during that time would be burnt. According to Hari, the books that came out in the 21st century were against riddled with the element of dystopia and issues related to being forgotten (Hari line 2). Nothing from this statements could be further from the truth relative to the fact that most of the books that came before this this time have been forgotten. Most of the books that still remain are those that have been pulled off the shelves by the curriculum. As Hari puts, there is an element of obsession that is associated with the electronic gadgets that most of the people have (Hari line 33). For most people it is much easier to keep staring at a screen on their phones going through shopping listings. This is an element that is borne of the fact that, most of the people have been enslaved by the consumerism culture.
