Hawk roosting

Essay Instructions:

Hawk Roosting
I sit in the top of the wood, my eyes closed. Inaction, no falsifying dream Between my hooked head and hooked feet: Or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat.
The convenience of the high trees!
The air's buoyancy and the sun's ray
Are of advantage to me;
And the earth's face upward for my inspection.
My feet are locked upon the rough bark. It took the whole of Creation To produce my foot, my each feather: Now I hold Creation in my foot
Or fly up, and revolve it all slowly -I kill where I please because it is all mine. There is no sophistry in my body: My manners are tearing off heads -
The allotment of death. For the one path of my flight is direct Through the bones of the living. No arguments assert my right:
The sun is behind me. Nothing has changed since I began. My eye has permitted no change. I am going to keep things like this.

Hawk roosting is one of the best poems of the time written by Ted Hughes. Ted was one of the best poets from Northern England and lived between the years 1930 and 1998. He started writing poems as a student, but most of the works that got him noticed were during the 50s and the 60s. This poem was written in the 60s, with the main theme relating to the ultimate power as seen in the hawk eye. The poem is more of a monologue that is dramatic, referencing a personified hawk and the killer instincts inside him. In the poem, the hawk seems like ultimate predator, with the world as its muse (Rukhaya, 2012). The hawk’s thoughts and attitudes relates to the brute power that he has over his territory and more so the power that lies within his body especially his head and the feet, which are curved. According to the hawk his entire kingdom is under his feet and his mighty control, killing at will without a care.
I choose this poem because, it relates to the aspect of power and the arrogance it brings. Reading through the poem, there is the element of the hawk feeling invincible due to the power that he holds over his prey that is within the territory bounds. There is a close relation between what the author is trying to reveal about the hawk and its perfection alongside the way he acts. Humans have the same arrogance when they have all the power and every other aspects of their territory bowing down to their might. As such, where the author relates to the themes of power, arrogance and attitude of the hawk, there is a close reflection on the human nature.
A closer look at the poem reveals that the speaker in the poem is a man, who has had a lo...
