Typically, support for children is assumed as a for-granted social issue states should continue to uphold. The growing number of single-parent households is making support for children until 18 a matter of social responsibility governments should continue to show if only as a safety net measure and as part of social justice and peace. The issue of support for children by states becomes controversial, however, when some call for support after 18, when “children” are already college students. This re-frames child support from a social issue of wide social support into a public policy matter of far-reaching-consequences. I argue for not supporting children by states beyond 18 for 3 main reasons.
First, so called “children” attending college are already in legal age. This makes actions made by persons 18 years and older accountable and, should any violation occur, punishable. So, if persons 18+ years are already “full citizens,” why would states continue to support some citizens, considered “children,” and not many other citizens who are 18+ yet do not fall into certain social/familial criteria making such “unqualified” persons eligible for aid? This is a public policy question and is, in fact, a matter of social justice. In short, each and every person 18+ should receive equal aid under law should such persons are eligible for state aid.
