Global Inequalities
The paper will discuss how global inequalities are a result of colonial exploitation and the way it shaped the Aminata's experiences and the theme's development.
Global inequalities are represented in the novel by having a strong female protagonist because it is used by the author to highlight gender inequality. Aminata is a solid foundation for any woman who reads the book. Aminata gets abducted as a child and is taken across the Atlantic Ocean to work as a slave in South Carolina where they are sold to work at an indigo plantation. After that, she is taken in as an urban slave by another master and, then she escapes to New York City during the American Revolution. The experience of Aminata escaping slavery, here struggle for survival, gaining dignity, and rights of motherhood are all used to promote awareness about slavery.
During her years of slavery, she becomes known for her skills in midwifery, which she learned in her childhood years, being taught by her mother. Secretly, Aminata learns to read from another slave, and then her literacy skills improve. After Aminata’s baby is sold and she does not want to work, a Jewish couple buys her, where she learns arithmetic. There, she works as a bookkeeper, which was considered a man's job because women were not considered to be intelligent enough to perform such a task. She does not get assigned to the kitchen because it is regarded as a female's job, together with other domestic responsibilities. Aminata, who does not conform to the sexist norm at that time, is an example of going against gender stereotypes. The actions of Aminata, together with other women who do the same, opened the way for gender equality to be possible in the workforce of today's modern society.
Based on Aminata's experience of gender inequality, she uses the available resources to her to become a strong woman of her time. Aminata should constantly adapt to the changes she encounters. These are geographical, familial, cultural, and intellectual changes. She sees the profoundness of slavery and how inhumane it is, but she mainly explores the moral and spiritual discrimination of the slave trade.
