1 If you find yourself in an ethical dilemma, what question should you ask yourself in order to determine the best course of action? Prepare a list of criteria which an ethical lapse is likely to occur? In other to prevent ethical problem and promote ethical behavior what a company can do?
Leaders should always be able to understand how ethical dilemmas relate to the complexity of circumstances within an organization. It is his duty to be able to weigh every decision and its corresponding consequence and make a decision accordingly. When faced with an ethical dilemma, some of the questions that a leader must ask himself are; (1) whether there are written or prescribed rules (i.e., company rules or protocols) on dealing with the situation; (2) Are there any ‘unwritten’ rules (i.e., norms, moral codes) that might be affected with such actions; (3) how would each decision be perceived by every stakeholder involved; (4) What are the potential effects of such decision to each stakeholder involved; and (5) how can we prevent this from happening again in the future. From these five questions leaders must be able to weigh their decisions based on their responsibilities as leaders and as humans. These questions are important in order to mitigate, not only the direct negative consequences of their actions, but also the indirect effects that it might have to other stakeholders.
Accordingly, in order to prevent an ethical lapse from happening, a leader must be able to determine the set of criteria wherein he could foresee if an ethical lapse is likely to occur. Some of these criteria includes; (1) differences in religious beliefs, (2) disparities in culture,
Finally, companies are at the forefront of preventing any ethical lapses on the part of their employees. Some of the things that companies could do in order to prevent ethical problems and promote ethical behavior among their employees are; (1) establish a clear and steadfast ethical code, (2) implement sanctions towards offenders, (3) conduct regular seminars about how to abide by the ethical code, and (4) reward those who are steadfast in following these codes, (5) implement mentorship and open communication between members and leaders to determine the root cause of the problem.
