Superior rhetoricians know their strengths and weaknesses, as well as more neutral qualities, such as their tendencies and in which traditions they typically write. In this assignment, you make this knowledge explicit by analyzing several of your past works.

Select three past works you have written. They can be papers written for a class, or other writing. (attached)

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper in which you analyze the three written works as objectively as possible. This analysis should apply conceptual tools introduced in past classes, as well as concepts from the reading.

Include the following in your analysis:

  1.
    • Identify patterns or tendencies in how these papers are written.
    • Identify patterns or tendencies in the reasoning used in these papers.
    • Identify rhetorical strategies used in these papers.
    • Identify the strengths of these papers.
    • Identify the weaknesses of these papers.
    • Identify any flaws or biases in the reasoning used in these papers.

Be specific. For example, consider questions such as:

  1.
    • Are metaphors and figures of speech used? How well?
    • Are there patterns in how and where metaphors and figures of speech are used?
    • How long are the sentences? Are there common structures?
    • What level of education do your writing samples assume in the audiences for this writing? What previous knowledge of the subject does your writing assume of the audience? Do they fit the target audience?
    • What signs or evidence of audience awareness can you find in the texts?
    • Consider the three classic rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. Which one do you tend to use most? Where and when do you use the different appeals? How effectively do you use them?

Note: No outside research is required, but any additional resources must be cited correctly and your paper should be formatted consistent with MLA guidelines.

Wk. 1 - Where Are You Starting? Analyzing Your Rhetorical Practices
Rhetoric is a powerful tool. It helps one to promote their ideas while also evoking specific responses from the audience. In my previous papers, I have used rhetoric to communicate messages on different topics. Consequently, I have posted reflections to show what I intended to communicate and to what extent I was successful. In this paper, I seek to analyze three of my previous papers with a special focus on my rhetorical practices.
My three written works show a clear structure and flow. In each paper, I use several short paragraphs to separate the different points I want to make. For instance, in the paper on "The Classical Appeals in Action –George W. Bush's 9/11 Speech," I use different paragraphs to explain how I utilized ethos, pathos, and logos. Also, as I discuss how I used each of these concepts, I add sub-paragraphs to separate more than one example of the use of ethos, pathos, or logos.
In two of the previously written works, I assume that the audience has a general understanding of the topics I am discussing. In the two papers, "Examining Your Rhetorical Situation" and "The Classical Appeals in Action – George W. Bush's 9/11 Speech," the topics are common knowledge and, therefore, the reader should not have a hard time understanding what I am talking about. For instance, in the paper on "Examining Your Rhetorical Situation," I explain a scenario in which I applied rhetoric. In such a case, the reader does not need advanced knowledge to understand what I am talking about. They only need to understand the meaning of rhetoric, which I explained in the paper. In the Roe V. Wade paper, I assumed the reader did not know about the Roe V. Wade case. So, I had to add some knowledge about the case to let the reader know about the final ruling.
My papers show common and added reasoning based on research. For instance, in the reflection of my Roe V. Wade paper, I explain how my support for abortion was based on statistics, which showed that abortion rates reduced significantly after the Roe V. Wade ruling. In "The Classical Appeals in Action – George W. Bus...
