2 Authors and God's Curse
In Genesis chapter three, God puts the curse of sorrow upon the woman. God says that he will multiply the woman's sorrow and conceptions (King James Version, Gen. 3.16). He says this to mean that when giving birth, the woman shall experience pain and always feel this pain because she will bring forth many more children. God's curse of sorrow upon the woman is supposed to showcase how angry he was with the woman. God also put on the woman the curse of desiring thy husband (King James Version, Gen. 3.16). This means that the woman would live to desire thy husband in every manner. She would always seek to have a husband to provide for her, protect her, and father her children. Finally, God puts upon the woman the curse of being ruled by the man (King James Version, Gen. 3.16). The woman had proved that she was not the best at decision-making despite her equality to the man. It is for this reason that God humbled her and made her inferior to the man. Upon man, God placed the curse of the ground from which he came from. God said that man would no longer be able to eat from the garden (King James Version, Gen. 3.17). Instead, the ground from which the tree sprouted would be cursed, and man would have to eat from it. God also said that thistles and thorns would grow from the ground, and man would have to it from its herbs (King James Version, Gen. 3.18). God went ahead to place the curse of toiling upon the man. Man would have to sweat to live off the ground. Finally, God said that the ground and dust from which man came is where he would return (King James Version, Gen. 3.19).
In The Woman's Bible, Stanton discusses the woman's rejection by analyzing God's curse on women. In her opinion, Stanton finds that the woman was always superior to the man (Stanton 18). She cites various verses in the first two chapters of Genesis to explain her viewpoint. For instance, in verse 24 of chapter two, Stanton notes that the man had to leave his father and mother and cleave unto his wife (Stanton 22).
