The Russian Primary Chronicle bases their stories on legends and myths revolving around the foremost Russian society, especially the establishment of Rus’ Kievan and the origin of the Slavic people. The individuals who inhabit the present-day Novgorod district are the successors of Varangians who were Slavs at one time. The presence of such information in the Primary Chronicle leads to the conclusion that it is a rich source of Slavs’ historical information about their origin (Evans).
