The Russian Primary Chronicle
The Russian Primary Chronicle bases their stories on legends and myths revolving around the foremost Russian society, especially the establishment of Rus’ Kievan and the origin of the Slavic people. Every society has an origin, and one of the most important discovery is the origin of Slavs as one of the key Slavic-speaking people, who are ancient in the Russian society. The analysis of the Russian Primary Chronicle leads to the discovery of the evolution of the present day Slavs, from the time of Japheth, who led the ancient Slavs to flow westwards dominating the shores of the Varangian Sea where they intermingled with Chuds and Prussians. While the Varangians extended dominion eastwards towards Shem, they encountered the Slavs. The Slavs lived in the Danube for a long time, a region that is now characterized by the land lying in the Bulgaria and Hungarian stretches (Evans). The aspect of further scattering of the Slavs resulted in the division to form the Russians, Belarusians, and Ukrainians. Other Slavs sub-ethnic groups later changed their names basing on the places of settlements such as Croats and the Moravians. Russes were originally known as the Varangians, and the consequences among them led to the establishment of Gotlanders, English, Normans and the Swedes. The Slavs, just like the Ves’, Krivichians and the Chuds are all the descendant of Rus. The individuals who inhabit the present-day Novgorod district are the successors of Varangians who were Slavs at one time. The presence of such information in the Primary Chronicle leads to the conclusion that it is a rich source of Slavs’ historical information about their origin (Evans).
