What was the African-American experience of the New World between 1500 and 1800? What did you learn from the video that was new to you? Do you agree or disagree with all the main points that the video makes?
We know that after Bacon’s rebellion and Berkeley’s defeat, the state of the workforce in the Americas would gradually shift from the ‘planter-elite– indentured-servant’ relationship to the type of system that fosters slavery. This is because of two things: (1) the on-going trend of using slaves by other colonizers – Spain and Portugal, and (2) the economic benefits that the colonizers saw by using slaves instead of employing indentured servants. When it reached its peak, the slaves imported from Africa in around 1700 were increasing in number and were forced to work to death. During that time the social institutions such as the economy, politics, and even the church were even supporting the slavery system. Thus, this made the slaves’ population further increase to the point where 1/8 people were black. This current state of affairs, in turn, would bring significant social and cultural changes to both of these populations – Whites, and Blacks. As an example, due to the decrease in the import of slaves from Africa, the incumbent population was cut-off from their original culture making them develop their own unique set of traditions. On the other hand, this made the Whites more cohesive. This is due to the fact that the previous tension between classes and status (between Whites) was shifted to that of color, thus giving birth to racism. This is the part of the video that I loved most since it gave a very succinct representation of where, when, and how racism appeared.
