RivkaGlachen, narrates the story of Usl in a very logical and technical manner using all sorts of poetic devices. This make the story interesting and easier to follow. The major themes of the story include, love, friendship, and theme of superstition although it does not appear as one of the major themes. The author also uses different styles of writing such as sarcasm, conversational style, synchronicity and imagery.
The theme of family and love is presented in the story. Usl’s mother is loving and caring for Usl. In the beginning of the story, his mother had warned him of using his home phone for communication as matter of safety from hurricanes, terroristattacks or blackouts. The mother is also concerned about the tainted image of his son. When Usl calls him to ask her about the article and the photo in the picture, her mother tells him "…a mother has to fix what is said about her son, whatever the cost." (Usl at the Stadium) This implies his close attachment and the caring character that she has for her son. Also she is very loving and caring for her son in the sense that she provided him with a blue polished stone that could protect his son from evil powers. She always texted him "I love you!" and she informed him that she was very proud of him (Usl at the Stadium). This shows the strong attachment of family love that exists between Usl and her mother. In The Fall of the House of Usher presents bizarreness in their family. The love of bond between the featured brothers and sister is so strong that it supersedes death. An interpretation of the tale shows that the siblings are one person split into two and therefore they rely on each other for survival. This indicates the strong links of love and family attachments as expressed in the story (The Fall of the House of Usher). In Sonny’s Blues the story is all about the brotherhood love. Sonny’s mother asks Sonny to be his brother’s keeper. He should take of him irrespective of the fact that he is a drunkard and drug abuser. The story is similar to the narrative of Cain and Abel in the bible. Sonny takes over the responsibility of taking care of his brother after their mother passes on. The theme of love in the story extends to the communal love (Sonny’s Blues).
The theme of friendship and compassionate has also been presented in the story. Gregory is oneof the friends of Usl. He is concerned about the current status of Usl and the bad image that has been portrayed about him in the public. He comforts him and tells him that he should not be bothered about the words of the people. Also as an employer for Usl, Gregory appreciates the efforts of Usl in his business. He wrote the name of Uslunder a face labelled "triumphant"(Usl at the Stadium). He did this after an 84-year old woman appreciated the trust developed byUsl in providing her with genuine gold. Berge is another friend of Usl. He is a nice guy and willing to help Usl sue fordamages. He provides all the legal advice that Usl needs to make his sue successful.
