Leadership Profile: Lionel Messi
A leader in sport can take either a formal (takes a role that has been prescribed by another individual in the group) or informal (the leader emerges from a group due to interaction and group distinct needs) leadership role within a team (Sousa et al. p. 361). A good sports leader has diverse skills and experiences, excellent personal traits, and motivations to lead. He/she must be a constant learner, accountable, have a positive attitude, and self-aware. The leader must also have the ability to influence the team members to pursue common objectives and be accepted by the peer.Sport leaders may adapt several leadership styles including autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire and others.
In autocratic leadership, the leader makes all the decisions and does not consider the opinions or the preferences of the others in the team. Despite all the shortcomings of this leadership style, it helps in quick decision making and motivates the leader to complete the task quickly and effectively(Sousa et al. p. 363). This style is most effective when quick decisions are needed. Democratic, the leader is ready to share the team's decision and delegate responsibility within the group. The team has an opportunity to discuss and consult one another, developing interpersonal responsibility. Each individual in the team is assigned responsibility giving ownership of the task and a sense of belonging(Sousa et al. p. 364). This style is efficient when the group is small, there are no time restrictions, and the team has achieved the autonomous stage. Another leadership styles is theLaissez-faire where the leader allows the group to make its own decision. This may lead to a loss of group direction, and group members may be aggressive toward each other.
