Real power requires agreement beyond simple obedience because the appearance of acceptance can
always mask the development of revolt.

In this passage, O’Brien emphasizes the importance that the Party places on asserting its authority over the
internal world of its citizens. It is not enough that Winston says that two plus two equals five; he must
believe it. In this way the potential for dissent can be erased. One cannot express or act on disagreement if
deviation of thought is made impossible in the first place.

George Orwell's classic novel, 1984, exhibits a society that is subdued and controlled through psychological manipulation. Through the eyes of the characters, Orwell brings out psychological manipulation through the abundance of technology and physical control.
1. “Without any warning except a slight movement of O ‘Brien’s hand, a wave of pain flooded his body. It was a frightening pain, because he could not see what was happening, and he had the feeling that some mortal injury was being done to him.” (Orwell 244).
