The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Visual & Performing Arts Essay

Essay Instructions:

The final excursion is to Boston’s Gardner Museum, a recreation of a Renaissance palace that is located very close to the Museum of Fine Arts. It was built for Isabella Stewart Gardner at the turn of the 20th century who bought all the art and artifacts herself; her will said that the house would be open to the public under the stipulation that nothing in the rooms ever be changed. The museum is famous for its beautiful courtyard bedecked with flowers at all times of the year and an art heist in which a Rembrandt sea-scape and a Vermeer were stolen (still not recovered). It has a new wing where more current exhibitions are held.
To execute the assignment, you should go to the website and take a tour of all the different rooms. You should then choose a room and after viewing all the art and artifacts in it choose one on which to write. You should point out which feature is most striking to you (If you choose a painting, the Introduction to “The Annotated Mona Lisa” will still be helpful.) and write about why it appeals to you. You should also relate how the object is or is not representative of the time period in which it was created.
