Please Discuss The Defining Characteristics Of Various Genres And Movements, And Describe The Three Artworks Using Key Terms Such As Surrealism, Expressionism, Futurism, Etc.
No. 13 (White, Red on Yellow) by Mark Rothko
“Abstract Expressionalism” is an exceptional painting style that garnered massive fame during the 1950s. It encapsulated two distinct sensibilities. Jackson Pollock provided an exemplified illustration of this movement that embodied rhythmic, dynamic and energetic brushwork artistic compositions. Willem de Kooning was another artist that perfected this art genre to produce characteristic work that exuded contemplation constituting different color harmonies in a subtle way (Rothko 1). It also had static compositions created in simple forms that Mark Rothko embodied.
Rothko had effectively developed the format based on composition that he utilized in his lifetime by using variations and appropriate refinements. The essence of the abstract works was using figurative imagery and varied narrative content found on traditionalism to replace shape and the different colors that artists used. In illustration, an image possesses horizontal bars that demonstrate a variance in colors and size (Rothko 2). They dominate the vertical canvases that hang on the surface of the specified picture. The production of this effect originates from the “halo” formed after the overlapping of the horizontal bands with the background color taking its neutral dominance. The paint’s translucency is another facilitation of this effect because it undergoes dilution to stain and saturate the canvas’ fibers (Rothko 3). The artistry in the works comes out even with Rothko’s minimization of the tactile medium’s form to create a quality artistic effect with the brushwork bringing out its subtle nature.
In the “No. 13 (White, Red on Yellow)” painting, yellow and red form the main hues that produce a gleaming effect that evokes joy. Other works originate from the mixture of colors such as greens, maroons and blues that are dark in nature (Rothko 5). This painting, therefore, adhered to these features and great artistry to produce an ultimate floating effect that gave it life.
I Saw Figure 5 in Gold by Charles Demuth 1928
Charles Demuth is the mastermind behind this art work. He had a great artistic career that saw him create 8 portraits using abstract expressionalism from 1924 to the sunset years of 1929. These portraits served as tributes meant to inspire and appreciate future American artists, performers and even writers (Demuth 1). The future that Demuth planned for was the generation of artists that followed after his exceptional artistic career. Demuth was incomparably artistic in the creation of this art work because he utilized his friend’s ...
