Despite many companies embracing technology that replaces the human labor, work remains important to people. People consider it right when they are employed, rather than staying jobless. When people are employed in an organization or business they are kept busy and the tasks they perform are challenging; hence giving them ways of developing and learning new ways of solving obstacles they face both at work and in life. In this essay, the following question is addressed: Why are we still working (or are we not)? The essay asserts that people are still working, and various reasons that make people to continue working are provided.
People are still working since work is still an integrating force due to 2 primary features of work societies: firstly, to be employed or to seek employment is something that is considered morally good. Work is seen as a person’s duty and for a person to have a correct life, he or she is expected to work. Secondly, employment is a necessity for survival. It is a condition of individual, organizational, as well as institutional survival. People have to work so as to be able to survive. This is because for people to survive, they must be able to pay the cost of living, and to do this they need to find a job, and work. Work is a necessity for people’s survival; however, the use of technology has caused companies to cut costs by reducing their workforce. Technology has rendered some workers redundant through automation of tasks (Rifkin 1995). Companies opt to downsize and retain workers whose skills would add value to the company. This has served to increase the unemployment rate in developed nations since companies employ only a few people (Spickermann 2013).
Work also helps in raising people’s self-esteem, shapes individuals personality, and gives people sense of personal achievement (Mitra & Sharma 2014). People work in order to discover or create new ideas. People are involved in creating new methods that make the work easier or solve an existing problem. Furthermore, people work to provide new information and knowledge that change one’s perspective about the world.
