Learning a second language has been found challenging by many adults. Many reports show that international students and adult immigrants alike, who have been oversea for many years, still struggle with the language used in the new country.  Subsequently, the research about second language acquisition arises whether adult second language learners still have the potential to attain native proficiency in a second language. While a number of scholars claim that it is definitely possible for adults to gain native level in a second language, the others offer the contradictory opinion based on additional consideration such as the language fluency in the times of danger and anxiety. Besides, there are much more evidence-based studies such as statistics, case studies, and evolutionary models presenting that to attain a native proficiency is impossible for adults. Therefore, adult second language learners will not achieve native proficiency in a second language.

In conclusion, adult second language learners will not attain native proficiency. The current research show that those who can speak a second language fluently in a familiar situation lose the fluency and coherency when they are nervous or in danger. Hence, there are no adults that can speak a foreign language with native level. More studies of the human brain are needed in order to understand how the second language works differently from the native language in the brain

Learning a second language is a challenging task for many adults. Several reports show that adult immigrants and international students who have lived abroad for many years continuously struggle with the language used in new countries. Subsequently, the research on second language acquisition arises whether adult second language learners still can acquire native proficiency in a second language. While many scholars claim that adults can be proficient in a second language, others have contradictory thoughts based on further considerations such as language fluency in times of danger and anxiety. Besides, many evidence-based studies such as statistics, case studies, and evolutionary models assert that attaining native proficiency is an impossible task for adults. As such, adult learners will not achieve native-level proficiency.
With several renowned polyglots such as Luca Lampariello and Donovan Nagel, many second language learners are quite optimistic that they too can exceed expectations. Luca Lampariello is an Italian who can speak 11 languages, including Russian, Polish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. Like Luca, Donovan boasts of Italian, Georgian, Korean, Russian, and Irish in his portfolio, a feat he achieved throughout his twenties. And their level of proficiency is unrivaled (Stevie 2018). Based on these examples, it is possible to attain mastery and proficiency in a second language.
However, the above examples only consist of a tiny fraction of the global population. These individuals have made it a lifetime commitment to study several languages hence the proficiency. Native proficiency is fluency in the language equivalent to that of an educated and civilized speaker. Learners should know that speaking to be understood is not native-level proficiency.
