A system is a set of two or more elements that satisfies the following three conditions: 1- The behavior of each element has an effect on the behavior of the whole. 2- The behavior of the elements and their effects on the whole are interdependent. 3- However subgroups of the elements are formed, each has an effect on the behavior of the whole and none has an independent effect on it. Therefore, a system is a whole that cannot be divided into independent parts. The essential properties of a system taken as a whole derive from the interaction of its parts, not their actions taken separately. Therefore, when a system is taken apart it loses its essential properties. Introduction
It is evident that in a system all components that comprise the system are connected and operate in tandem to form the wholeness of the system. In every organization, an effective system ensures that the set goals are achieved. There is a discussion on the best practices that can be applied by managers to ensure effective performance of organizational systems. A system as a whole cannot be separated into independent segments. The essential characteristics of a system, taken as a whole, is a resultant of the joining of its consequent parts and not their actions being taken independently. In summation, the moment a system is taken apart from its consistent parts; it loses its vital characteristics. This essay discusses the composition of a system and how systems work and explains the system boundary as well as its environment. The essay also covers the discussion on the importance of effective leadership and managerial prowess for a successful performance of an organization.
System
In every system everything is connected. According to Tyler (n.d), in every organization there are systems that range from the smallest units, also referred to as micro-organization, to the largest unit known as macro-organization. The smallest units are as small as a family unit while the largest can be as big as the government or the state. These organizations can be thought as embedded or adjoined sets of systems. The influence of the system flows unequally in both directions, with the larger influence coming from the system to the individuals. In the same way that the individuals are influenced by the systems which are governed by the culture, economics, and politics, likewise the managers and the organization are influenced by the larger environment. This implies that to have a successful organization, it is important that managers and the organization at large, needs to analyze the winder environment with an aim of understanding its dynamics and its impact in order to make the appropriate plans (Tyler n.d, p.198).
An effective system makes things happen. In order to improve an organization, managers do a research with an aim of studying what is happening in the far environment, while gauging both threats and opportunities. The proper managerial actions can have an impact on the immediate environment of buyers, customers, suppliers, competitors as well as the other concerned stakeholders. An exception is only the internal environment of the organization which can be controlled directly. Every system has a boundary and an environment. According to Tyler (n.d) apart from the system, everything else comprises of the surroundings. A closer look at the environment of a system reveals that it consists of systems too, intermingling with their environments. Systems and environment are generally separated by a boundary (Tyler n.d, p 199). For an organization to work efficiently in a wider environment there is a need for a good leadership and management of people, led by an understanding of the things that motivates people to work, which is essential to the organizations ability to achieve externally-imposed competitive demands and pressure. ...
