Week 1 Assignment: Ecological Footprints, Sustainable Report

Essay Instructions:

Let’s think more about “Ecological Footprint” as a sustainability indicator. Please begin by reading and viewing two items from this week’s Resources:
Jamais Cascio: “Four Futures for the Earth”
Michael Pawlyn: “Using Nature’s Genius in Architecture”
Cascio’s essay shows a matrix with two axes, one running from “No Techno-Fixes” to “Techno-Fixes” and the other from “Act in time to change how we live” to “Don’t act in time to change how we live.” Recalling the Footprint Quiz, please relate these axes to making different lifestyle choices, or not, and to reinventing technology and infrastructure, or not.
Next, please consider Michael Pawlyn’s three conditions for moving toward sustainability:
1. Radical increases in resource efficiency
2. Linear to closed loop
3. Fossil fuel economy to solar economy
Matrix
There are lifestyle choices and trends that are likely to increase or decrease our “Ecological Footprints.” The same is true for technological and infrastructure develops. Please cite one example of each: one lifestyle trend increasing our Footprint and one decreasing it, one technological/infrastructure trend increasing our Footprint and one decreasing it. Please explain your reasoning for your choices – especially why you think each trend is significant enough for you to have chosen it.
Please state what conclusions you can make from this exercise.

This essay provides examples of lifestyle trends and infrastructure/technological trend that increases and decreases our ecological footprint.[“Footprint Basics,â€Β Global Footprint Network, Last Modified April 11, 2016, /en/index.php/GFN/page/footprint_basics_overview/]
Matrix
The household lifestyle trends have a huge impact on the environment. Any lifestyle choice determines what is consumed or produced indirectly or directly in terms of waste generation and natural stock. An example of the lifestyle trends that results in an increase in the ecological footprint is the increasing demand for processed food. While low-income populations often consume natural food items, middle- and high-income populations consume packaged and processed foods. The latter increases our ecological footprint because processing of food req...
