Fairy tales form part of literature used to uphold patriarchal principles of society, more so during the prehistoric times. Fairy tales convey moral and social lesson using skillful narrative combined with interesting characters. Cinderella is one of the fairy tales collected by the Grimm brothers presenting a patriarchal society with specific expectations bestowed upon women. Cinderella is a story that reinforces the values of a society where men have power over women. Important traits of women in the story include being modest, selflessness, beauty, and wealth.[Grimm, Jacob, and Wilhelm Grimm. In the story, the power of men over women is evident when the prince stated that “for he wished to see to whom the beautiful maiden belonged to." According to the story the prince, "might choose himself a bride” however women have no right to choose. Despite being treated unfairly, Cinderella remains humble and endured suffering for many years; she represents an ideal virtuous woman while her stepmother and sisters represent the opposite images. Cinderella is beautiful while her stepsisters were unattractive. Cinderella lives a simple and modest life, for example, when her father asked her, " and what would you have, child? Nothing father, but you commend me to the Dove of the fairies and bid her send me something".[Ibid 11] [Ibid 16]
