The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rapid digital transformation in many sectors, including healthcare, as organizations have had to adapt to remote work, telemedicine, and online data sharing. This transformation has presented new cybersecurity challenges, with hackers and cybercriminals seeking to exploit vulnerabilities and capitalize on the high demand for information about the virus (Palmer, 2021).
According to a report by top cybersecurity experts, there have been more than 4,000 cyber attacks per day since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic (source 2). One significant breach involved the theft and subsequent leaking of COVID-19 vaccine data (source 1). These cyber-attacks have disrupted the immediate pandemic response and raised concerns about the reliability and integrity of data used in pandemic mitigation efforts.
False-positive data can have a detrimental impact on pandemic mitigation efforts. If decision-makers rely on accurate or compromised data, they may implement effective or even counterproductive policies. This can lead to unnecessary panic, confusion, and mistrust among the public, further hindering the containment of the virus.
