1 What makes something deviant? What is deviant over conformity, and why is it so common in sports? Provide some examples of deviant over conformity that are common or unique to sports. Please don’t use the ones I discussed in my notes. Instead, imagine your own.
Deviant over conformity in sports is the process or circumstance wherein athletes go against accepted norms in sports, health, and well-being in line with the belief that such would make them better and stronger.
One of the main reasons this phenomenon is so common in sports is because of the general belief that enduring such hardships would help them reaffirm their identity as an athlete. For example, even though the accepted ‘norm’ is that individuals should rest whenever they feel a severe muscle strain, the principle of deviant over conformity makes the athlete believe that these kinds of injury are just a normal part of the process of becoming the best in whatever sports that the individual is playing on. This is reflected in adages such as ‘no pain, no gain.’
Accordingly, one example of this deviant over conformity in sports is one’s excessive devotion to training, thereby leading to the neglect of one’s family. Some athletes tend to endure their desires to visit, talk, and connect with their family members for their belief that these ‘sacrifices’ are some of the things that they need to do to succeed in sports. However, as stated earlier, this deviant behavior has no proven advantages but is only used by others to make themselves believe that they are sacrificing something for their passion, thereby reaffirming their identity as an athlete.
