Personality development is the process by which the person constructs his or her individuality by honing interpersonal behavioral traits. It varies from person to person and does not follow a strict step-by-step process. This is because an individual’s personality development, including behavioral development, is distinguished by key elements such as the environment and reinforcements, as explained by the social cognitive theory.
The social cognitive theory explains that a person’s actions can be adapted or influenced by observing other people. Observation becomes the key to knowledge acquisition and is the main element that allows an individual to hone individual knowledge as influenced by outside factors, including the environment. In this case, the individual selects specific behaviors and imitates these based on one’s liking (Kurtines et al., 2013). The individual needs to interact with his or her environment and have a first-hand experience of every situation to know how to act on it. In this way, the individual learns about practicality, suitability, and the impact of one’s behavior. Moreover, the individual learns about the beliefs, strategies, skills, and attitudes that one may adopt as his attribute (Ryan, 2012).
The mentioned elements and factors may be reinforced by media platforms, such as television programs and movies. Each program or movie has a unique theme, and the individual is exposed to this theme. Chukwu-Okoronkwo et al. (2020) investigated the effects of aggressive themes on the youth in Nigeria. Often, the most general themes in television programs and movies include a combination of sex, violence, and horror, which negatively impact youth behavior. Some studies and critics revealed that these shows mold the poor behavior of the youth in Nigeria, probing them to engage in antisocial activities. In turn, these promote violence in their household and among their peers. The household members and peers exposed to such attitudes and behaviors may adopt the same negative attributes, which becomes a cycle for the individual and his social environment.
