Introduction
When one thinks about sexuality, there are turns of ideas that are likely to run through the mind. Certainly, a political angle to the topic is highly unlikely to cross one’s mind. This is for what seems to be an obvious reason that the two are strange bedfellows. However, delving deeper into the topic, one discovers that they may not be as strange bedfellows after all. There is indeed a relation between sexuality and political positions. In this discussion, this seemingly ignored relationship between sexuality and politics will be explored. In particular, the paper will focus on how the two aspects relate to each other. Further, the discussion will seek to establish some of the existing social problems arising from this relationship and the possible solutions.
Politics and Sexuality
In order to understand the relationship that exists between the two aspects, one must broaden the understanding of politics. As opposed to viewing politics from a narrow perspective of political parties, one must have broader thinking. The same way there exists a relationship between racism and politics; there is a relationship between sexuality and politics (Millet, 2010). Throughout history of society, there has been one constant aspect of domination stemming from patriarchy. Despite the fact that women form a greater majority in numbers than their male counterparts, they have always been treated as the minority. The men have constantly dominated over their women. The domination has not been confined to the social setting in families but has also been extended to the political arena. For a long time, politics has been a restricted zone only for men. For a very long time, women were denied various rights in relation to politics and democracy including voting. Women would later agitate and the status quo was reversed. Even after the reversal, women still struggle to thrust themselves into the political arena which is male dominated.
Traditional Morality and Individual Choice
Traditional morality has played a significant role in shaping political positions as they relate to sexuality. The social construction of society from a traditional perspective is that women are generally inferior to men (Sanchez, 2011).
