With mass shootings increasing especially in schools, one wonders which part of the country is safe. In the past two years, schools, cinemas, and even a church have been under attack, and in all instances, bodies of hopeful children lay scattered all over. These innocent souls seem to have been victims of a system that has failed to come up with policies which can help to alleviate the situation. On February 14th 2018, the world woke up to the news of another mass shooting in Parkland, Fla where 17 people were killed. This shooting is one of many but Americans seem to be united in their call for sanity and restoration of peace and safety in the schools. People have been debating policies which can be adopted and implemented to help ensure that children are kept safe. However, one policy suggestion seemed to catch everyone’s attention: arm the teachers and stop mass shootings in schools. Initially, this suggestion did not have any traction, but when President Trump voiced his opinion of it, everyone knew that it was up for serious debate. People were divided as was expected and this article will try to make a case against arming teachers.
First of all, research indicates that the rate of gun-death in the U.S. is higher than in any other country in the world. White (2016) notes that “homicide rates in the U.S. were seven times higher than an average of other high-income countries, largely fueled by a gun homicide rate in the U.S. that is about 25 times higher than others.” Research also seems to indicate that the US citizens own more guns than other countries in the world. Fox (2018 indicates that “Americans own nearly half (48%) of the estimated 650m civilian-owned guns worldwide.” Looking at the two revelations, there seems to be a correlation between guns and death.
