People are divided by more than just the physical world making the formulation of approaches to address the topic diverse and multilevel depending on the focus of the researcher. The study of division of people traverses the physical separation and includes but not limited to their ideologies, beliefs, and aspects of daily life. The question of what divides people needs deeper analysis as different elements can be used to create the distinctions between people. The focus in determining the factors that differentiate people is on what exactly is identifiable with one group that sets it apart from others. The factors that hold a group together while at the same time differentiates them from others is their dividing factor. This paper looks at different elements that divide people by studying various texts on the same. It looks at different approaches of global division and the ideologies behind their manifestation.

In this article, Friedman offered an analysis of a flattened world as different signs of progress made towards globalization bringing people and traversing formerly existing barriers towards global connection. He explained global barriers using the approach of globalization phases through time with nations opening their borders, then to international companies and finally individual and group connection. He highlights infrastructure as one barrier as people find a common ground to share their ideas with a larger audience. The lack of infrastructure for global connections like institutions and investors stunted the progress of poor countries as they did not have the opportunity to advance. The article focuses on technology as the major barrier beaker towards globalization which allows people who did not formerly have one despite their physical location. The lack of a platform where people can express their ideas to a global audience is what divides people from opportunities. A creative student in rural India can be able to air their ideas to potential investors or institutions while still in India. The lack of resources divides people from obtaining an expression medium blocking them from global access to information and platforms for expression. The easy access to technology can enable a person to set up a website without the need for extensive resources and have access to the world.

The article starts by looking at the various elements that divide people i.e. east or west, rural or urban, secular or religious and globalists or nationalists citing them as non-comprehensive as they do not encompass time and relational changes. He classified culture to be either loose or tight depending on how the members adopt and practice their culture.
