Physical Capabilities and Housing Situation Assessment

Essay Instructions:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION TO CONSIDER BEFORE DOING THE ASSESSMENT/EXAM:

FIRST, CHOOSE YOUR PERSON:

Choose the older person you wrote about in your first paper, or another relative, friend, neighbor, for whom you can assess their physical capabilities and housing situation.  Do not choose a partnered couple or more than one person. Choose one person who is aging in place.  If your person lives with others, that is fine, but only assess one person.  Do not choose someone who lives in a long-term care residence, assisted living, or SNF.  Your person must be aging in place in an independent living situation which is either their own home, or someone else’s home.

SECOND, CHOOSE THE HOME IN WHICH TO ASSESS YOUR PERSON:

If you do not live near your person and are not able to visit them in their own home, you will need to write up an assessment of this person as if they were living in your home that you live in now (remember how you had a Discussion Board assignment to look around your own home and describe how it would suit you as you age?). If you are using your physical environment to assess their interaction, then assume they are living in your home space with whomever else lives there already, you, roommates, family, renters, etc..  Look around your own home (as we did in a discussion post) with them in mind.

OR If your person lives near you, and you are able to visit your person in their own home where they are aging in place, you can do an actual assessment of them in THEIR home.

State clearly which option you are doing—either assessing your person in your home or theirs.

Understanding the needs of individuals is important for any social worker. A deep consideration of the individual’s physical, financial, emotional, and even spiritual needs is essential to ensure that the best and most feasible kind of care is afforded upon them. Accordingly, this paper would focus on Anna Latina, who is a refugee from El Savador. Specifically, the subsequent sections would focus on conducting a (1) personal and (2) physical assessments, as well as (3) assessment of housing problems that Anna faces. All in all, it is my belief that having a better understanding and a careful and strategic approach to building Anna’s environment and habitation is important for her health and overall well-being.
Personal Assessment
Anna Latina is a 58-year-old female who is a refugee from El Salvador and identifies as Hispanic/Latina. Anna is able to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) independently, but needs assistance with Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) such as transportation and managing finances. According to her, her income level is low, earning around $25,000-$50,000 per year through employment as a house cleaner. She also pays $1,000 per month for her one-bedroom apartment. While her general health is fair, but she has some chronic conditions such as arthritis and vision problems, which require her to walk with a cane. Finally, she takes three medications to manage her conditions. Accordingly, I am a social worker assigned to assist Anna with accessing resources to meet her needs.
Physical Assessment
Currently, Anna lives in a one-bedroom apartment, located at 1605 E 174th St, Bronx, NY, in a suburban area. The apartment was built in 1990 and is on the first floor of a two-story building with an elevator. Despite some issues in terms of security (i.e., faulty door locks and lack of security cameras) the building itself is made of concrete and has a secured entrance. Nonetheless, upon going to Anna’s house, here are some of the design features and modifications that I have made, in order to address her physical difficulties.

Front Door/Entrance and Exit
The front door has a small step, which may pose a challenge for Anna with her arthritis and mobility issues. Since the building was built in the 1990s, there were yet no ramps in the front door, which makes it difficult for some residents. Thus, I added a temporary, yet modified ramp with handrail to improve access and safety.
Hall or Foyer
The apartment has a small foyer, which provides a space for Anna to store her coat, shoes, and other belongings.
Kitchen
The kitchen is small but functional, with ample storage space for Anna's cooking utensils and food. The countertops are at a suitable height for Anna to prepare her meals comfortably. However, the upper cabinets may be challenging to reach, and installing pull-down shelves or lowering the cabinets may improve accessibility (Kang & Lee, 2016).
Dining/Eating Area
