Moldova is a country in Eastern Europe that is bordered by Romania and Ukraine. It covers an area of about 33,700KMsq. The average elevation is 147 m (482 ft.) above sea level. The central portion of Moldova is occupied by the Kodry Hills which rises to a maximum elevation of about 430 m (about 1,410 ft.) at Mount Balanesti. The country is known for its wines, with a well-established wine industry, it has a vineyard area of 147,000 hectares with 102,500 hectares used for commercial production. Cricova is one of the largest wine cellars in the world, with 120 km tunnel-like storage galleries (Moldova, 2015).
Moldova contains a vast river system with over 3,000 rivers and streams. The Dniester and the Prut, the two largest rivers, rise in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine to the north of Moldova. The Dniester flows through the eastern portion of Moldova in a southeasterly direction. The Prut, which is a major tributary of the Danube River, occupies Moldova's entire western border. The other rivers include the Yalpug, the Byk, and the Reut (Moldova, 2015).
