Like all other nations formed during the anti-colonial revolutions, the United States faced the challenge of creating a solid economy, preserving national independence, and creating a stable political system. The presence of these challenges provided a legitimate place for opposition. Therefore, the 1790s was categorized as a difficult moment for the United States, making the nation feel vulnerable. Mettler and Lieberman (2020) suggest that the United States felt vulnerable to international threats because of the rising internal threats within the country. The division between the federalists and republicans was the basis for the tension, thus threatening democracy.
