Intimate Partner Violence in Jamaica Author’s Name Institutional Affiliation Course Code and Name Professor’s Name Date Intimate Partner Violence in Jamaica The problem of gender-based violence, especially intimate partner violence, is on a growing trajectory in the Caribbean, Jamaica in particular, despite most of the world indicating a significant decrease in such matters. Unlike different regions around the world where the issues of IPV are decreasing, Jamaica continues to report many issues of gender-based violence, ranking it among the most highly violent nations in the globe. After Central America, Caribbean countries where Jamaica is found rank the second most violent region in the world. Among the countries in the region, the issues of IPV in Jamaica rank in the third stage of development, which is at a severe condition necessitating action to address them. As Cameron affirms, the issues of IPV in Jamaica are evidenced by the high number of cases of violence against women, the high number of homicides, and armed offenses by gangs in the country. Jamaica has been persistently and increasingly experiencing gender-based violence, especially intimate partner violence, which tends to threaten the lives of the most vulnerable groups, such as women (Descartes et al., 2021). An increase in the number of youths and young adults involved in drug abuse, armed gangs, and corruption with institution exacerbates discriminatory behaviors towards a certain gender hence increasing gender inequalities in the country. In Jamaica, structural factors prevent relevant institutions from addressing the issues, holding perpetrators accountable, and barriers to survivors accessing justice, protection, and prevention.
