M4D1: Integration of Fields in Scientific Research

Essay Instructions:

Identify and explain the discovery you are going to be examining Clearly indicate the two (at least) fields of the sciences that have enabled the researchers to make this discovery. Show how each field impacts the research in the other. What did they each bring to the research to enable this discovery? Explain how a more traditional scientific approach may have not allowed the same depth and breadth of discovery, but the integration of fields has lead to more creative and expansive research opportunities.

The Discovery
The discovery in this study is the bionic lens which is a system of artificial lenses meant to correct visual problems. The lenses are normally inserted into the eyes using a surgical procedure. The discovery improvesvision by more than three times and completely eliminates the use of contact lenses and glasses (King, 2016). The artificial lenses replace the natural lenses and this helps great a deal in preventing cataracts. The two fields of science involved in the discovery include Physics and Biology.
Physics
The discovery applies the wave fronttechnologyin order to correct optical aberrations. The elastic lens system has multiple chambers that can be expanded using gases or fluid (King et al., 2016). The force transmission media for this device is a Velcro type mechanism and lens suspension system consisting of zonules with a load bearing joint. The natural ciliary tension and the forces transmitted along the joint system makes it possible for the synthetic lens to change its shape (King et al., 2016). Physics principles were also used to come up with the perfect geometry for the wall structures of the lens.
Biology
To begin with, the device is meant for use by a biological organ and that is why the lenses are referred to as the "bionic" lenses. The shape of the synthetic lens is modified by the human eye and the lens’ shape cannot change without the pressure from the muscles of the ciliary body which ensure that the suspensory ligaments tense and relax to facilitate the accommodation process (Turisco, 2011). The lens is a crystalline protein whose optical power is enhanced by the pressure from the eye. Biological processes are also applied at the insertion stage because it is normally a surgical procedure. The study involved a thorough research on how the naturalhuman lens works in order to come up with a perfect replacement with better optical capabilities. The natural biological mechanism of the eye helps a great deal in helping the synthetic lens to perform its purpose.
Traditional research approach versus field integration approach
It is clear from the explanations that both the physics and the biology fields were very critical in the discovery of the bionic lens. It was important for the researchers to understand the biology of the eye and how it functions for them to come up with the bionic lens. On the other hand, the synthetic lens was designed using physics principles but the biological principles complete the entire device. The discovery is a perfect blend of physics and biology and has been proven to be successful going by the results from the trials.
The traditional scientific approach would not have led to this discovery because it would have not allowed the same depth and breadth of discovery because the re...
