Fox News runs digitally altered images in coverage of Seattle’s protests, Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
/seattle-news/politics/fox-news-runs-digitally-altered-images-in-coverage-of-seattles-protests-capitol-hill-autonomous-zone/
What
Seattle Times uncovered that Fox News had digitally altered images showing protests inside Seattle’s “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone,” which was ousted police control and had been taken over by protestors (Brunner, 2020). The broadcasting station showed the violent protests and one of the images shows a civilian with a rifle and in military fatigues beside a shattered business ‘despite protestors claiming to be peaceful’. Other images were not from Seattle including a man ruing away from a burning building, which is from Minnesota.. Fox News reports overemphasized that there were violent clashes and the place dangerous, but this was not necessarily the cases as there were violent incidents, but not an armed occupation (Stanley, 2020). There are competing narratives on the Seattle protests in the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” from the protesters and Fox News, with the latter critical of the occupation.
Why
While there were some violent clashes, the digitally altered images were meant to show that there was high level of violence and the occupied area had become lawless. This painted the people as dangerous and the local officials were shown to be incompetent who cannot ensure law and order even as there was anarchy (The New Daily, 2020). In an election year where there have been increased protests, the images also show that the areas that have Democrat legislators are unruly and ungovernable. Fox News various images that attempted to show that Seattle’s autonomous zone was a no go zone and the place was anarchic because of violent protestors.
When
The news report was made June 12 after the Seattle protests in the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” at a time when there had been increased protests against police brutality. There had been violent protests in different places, but the autonomous zone was unique because the protestors claimed it was a ‘police-free zone’. The issue has disrupted normal business where the so called’ ‘anarchists’ patrol the ‘autonomous zone’ (Brunner, 2020). To bolster credibility, Fox News quoted a police union chief who indicated that there was no political will to bring law and order. Where
The protests occurred in the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone” of Seattle in radius in downtown Seattle that had been established in May 25, 2020 (Amore, 2020). Viewers of Fox News then highlighted the story and the figures circulated among conservative circles who tune to the station. Thus,...
