Lifespan development encompasses cognitive, social personality and physical development. Empirical research highlights the scientific approaches to understanding how spirituality is related to development. The theories are important to explaining and predicting how development occurs, where Freud’s psychosexual development has five stages from oral to genital phase in the adolescent stage, and the theory explains development while also acknowledging that the unconscious influences affect human development (Mitchell, 2012).
Prenatal development psychology increasingly looks at how prenatal experiences in determining cognitive functioning and personalities. Children may or may not be conscious of their experiences, their responses and social context influence their development (Hollenstein, Granic, Stoolmiller, & Snyder 2004). All forms of development are affected by internal and external factors and this includes spiritual development.
