Subculture
Various groups of people often come together to form their own way of life and belief systems, so as to distinctly identify with themselves as a separate subset of the larger group. Subculture refers to a cultural group or a group of people within a larger culture. This cultural group or the group of people always has beliefs and interests that are completely different from those of the larger group. It is however, impacted in one way or the other, by the larger culture. Through learning and understanding subcultures, there is a clearer understanding of the smaller building blocks that altogether add up to constitute the larger culture. Subcultures offer a way of studying and understanding the inner or deeper intricacies of culture in the sociological context. The U.S. has got its own types of subcultures within the larger cultures.
Examples
The military culture, this consists of those families with people serving in the United States military and army. This is a culture of respect, ceremony, celebrations, hierarchy and self-discipline. Spouses of those working in the army find themselves in close relationships, sharing out hardships unique to their families (Weaver, 2016). The Amish culture, these people live in simple rural homes, and they value virtues like humility and hard work. Their married men don’t shave, and women cover their heads, and they are devoted to religion. These people like eschewing technology. The LGBT culture, they include Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transgender people as the initials suggest. These people are involved in riots and protests for their rights as the larger community discriminate them because they perceive these sexualities as abnormal. Other subcultures to mention they include fandom, homesteading, gamers, and the west coasts (Weaver, 2016). To understand subcultures in a clearer way however, there is a need to map out is history and growth over time, so as to have a more solid hold of the same.
History of subculture
The Subcultural theory began and was developed at the Chicago schools by some sociology students. This was happening at the 1920s. The School further researched on some abnormal behaviour and concluded the abnormal behaviours to have resulted due to some problems in the larger community or, the larger culture (Buckner et al., n.d). In some additional research, it was found out that abnormal behaviours were not caused by poor decision-making skills, failures in moral virtues, or mental disorders; rather, they were caused mainly by social problems.
Later on, some students discovered that for different social groups to succeed, they should work together in unity. They also observed that emergence of competition and conflict force people to adapt to the changes in society. All these findings of subcultures can be said to have been sociology. This because it is the study of social problems. It was then concluded that subcultures could have been as a result of economic changes, some several innovations in the nation, and more so technological improvement and advancement (Buckner et al., n.d).
