Enforcing the ACA Code of Ethics and the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals

Essay Instructions:

Standard D.1.d. Establishing Professional and Ethical Obligations of the ACA Code of Ethics (Herlihy & Corey, 2014) and Statement 23 from the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals (NOHS, 2013): Counselors who are members of interdisciplinary teams clarify professional and ethical obligations of the team as a whole and of its individual members. When a team decision raises ethical concerns, counselors first attempt to resolve the concern within the team. If they cannot reach resolution among team members, counselors pursue other avenues to address their concerns with client well-being (Herlihy & Corey, 2014).
Case example: The members of a treatment team meet to discuss their decision to provide an initial DSM-5 diagnosis at the first meeting with a client. This decision was the result of some pressure from the agency director, who made it clear that establishing a diagnosis and formulating a treatment plan were required by the HMO (insurance). On ethical grounds, some of the professional staff objected to the pressure to formulate a diagnosis and specific treatment plan at the initial session. Others on the staff did not share the same ethical concerns and believed some policies could be changed. Because the team did not have a unified view of this policy that affected practice, they asked for time to discuss their concerns with the agency director (p. 80).
Please respond to the following:

Code of Ethics
Counselors are all bound by the American counselling association code of ethics that controls the baseline of the practice. One of the ethical concerns that come out in this case relates to putting the clients life in danger (Counseling.org, 2016). It is always crucial for the professionals to make sure that they come up with decisions that promote client’s safety. When being in a multifaceted group of professionals it is always crucial to make sure that the personal differences do not impair judgment and, therefore, decision as is evident in this case. In this case, the professionals should also ensure that they do not make decisions with biases, an example is the case with coming up with the treatment plan and the diagnosis at this early stage. A misdiagnosis made in a hurry to appease the insurance companies could easily compromise the client’s health and well-being (Counseling.org, 2016).
