The understanding of healthcare ethics plays a bigger role in my ability to think critically and arrive at solutions to challenges at the professional level. Health care ethics provides the ideal code of conduct to guide our problem-solving processes. It directs us not to inflict harm to patients, to be just and fair in treating similar cases, to be of beneficence to others health wise and most importantly to honor the rights of patients. In a hospital setting where I volunteered to help out, I had to apply healthcare ethics in aiding patients who were not so kind to me. The values helped suppress my emotional reaction hence allowing me to act in a professional manner (Dinc & Aydemir, 2014).
Moral integrity encompasses one’s ability to adhere the rules they consider they ought to follow. Moral integrity is living according to the accepted standards of a particular group. Ethical behaviors refer to the general principles put in place by external forces or organizations. Moral integrity is considered the principle foundation of Ethical practices (Dinc & Aydemir, 2014). Moral integrity deals with right or wrong. Ethical behaviors guide us at arriving at decisions deemed right by one’s profession. A good example is with time management in my volunteer program. I had to report to work early as I learned about keeping time in my childhood. The result enabled me to meet the ethical requirement of clocking in on time in the hospital (Uhr, 2015).
There exists a difference between the two, though. While moral integrity deals with internal guiding rules, ethical behaviors resonate around external principles like the ones put in place by an organization. We end up adhering to ethical standards as a result of compliance to what the society says while in Moral integrity, our codes of conduct are rooted in the personal/individual belief. Moral integrity is consistent depending on a given context like a company’s code of conduct while ethical behaviors can change with an individual’s belief (Uhr, 2015).
