C.2.b. New Specialty of Areas of Practice and F.7.h. Innovative Theories and Techniques of ACA Code of Ethics (Herlihy & Corey, 2014). Counselors practice in specialty areas new to them only after appropriate education, training, and supervised experience. While developing skills in new specialty areas, counselors take steps to ensure the competence of their work and to protect others from possible harm. When counselor educations teach counseling techniques/procedures that are innovative, without an empirical foundation, or without well-grounded theoretical foundation, they define the counseling techniques/procedures as “unproven” or “developing” and explain to the students the potential risks and ethical considerations of using such techniques/procedures. 
Case example: Willene is asked to facilitate a support group for survivors of sexual abuse. Although she has attended several workshops on counseling for trauma and sexual abuse and has done extensive reading in journals and books on the subject, she has limited experience working directly with survivors. She arranges to cofacilitate the group for the first 3 months with a colleague who has experience counseling survivors of sexual abuse. She also seeks ongoing supervision of her work (Herlihy & Corey, 2014, p. 68).
