3398 - Reflection 5 As a Caucasian male brought up in a small town located in west Texas, I have experienced various changes in the demographic composition of my home area and changing interaction perspectives over time. During my early days, the region was predominantly occupied by Caucasians with minimal population from other races. As a result, diversity was scarce lest for occasional times when visitors would pass by as they transit through the state. However, over time, the town has been expanding, attracting people with diverse backgrounds. This gradual change has tremendously increased the diversity of this area, triggering views about my skin color that I rarely experienced in the past. Although rare and covert, I have experienced unusual treatment by people because of my skin color. Before the rise of diversity in west Texas, I was rarely conscious of my skin color as no one cared about such minor aspects of life. People were busy toiling to improve their economic conditions and live better lives. However, diversity brought another dynamic in the society by raising issues of unequal treatment and differing perceptions about people from various races. In this context, I experienced a scenario where aggrieved persons associated my skin color with privilege. They complained that they would not have been denied an opportunity for a supply deal in a local company if they were not from a less dominant race.
