Air transport is an essential mode of transportation globally, with services ranging from transportation of goods and ferrying of passengers. Compared to other forms of transport like water, air travel is a fast, reliable and comfortable mode of transportation. The need for fast transportation across countries and continents led to the rapid growth of the industry. Currently, there exist over two thousand airlines operating at least 23,000 planes and with operations in over 3700 airports across the world. In the 2006 alone, the airlines in total made over 28 million flights, carrying two billion passengers (Massachusets Institute of Technology, 2007). The growth a rate was by then estimated to be about five percent per annum with a projection of over thirty years. However, the rise in global terrorism activities has affected significantly the operations of airlines with the airspace being a major target for the terrorists, considering the impact it has on the concerned countries economic and social status.
