Think about the results from the Gallup Survey for a minute, and how it compares to the Academy, Baseball Team, Fortress, and Club cultures described by McNamara in the Background reading.

In your opinion, do the Gallup results fit your general expectations or constitute a surprise in some ways? Interpret the results of the Gallup survey in terms of your own experience, either to confirm or to question the results. Compare the Gallup results and your opinions with the McNamara categories.

The Gallup results fit my general expectations. First, I have always wondered how people would choose to work in the same organization for more than ten years. I am the kind of person who moves on to new challenges and the next opportunity the moment it arises. However, there are people who can choose to stay with the same organization for a long time. For me, growth is a key reason I would choose to leave an organization. The Gallup results indicate that “the innate yearning to learn and grow is natural to human beings” (Gallup, 2008). Therefore, I know that I will feel some dissatisfaction and choose to move to a different organization. Also, I agree with the results because they speak to the importance of the mission and purpose of an organization. Working towards a greater purpose or goal or being involved in something revolutionary is a quest I welcome every day. However, I was surprised that pay and benefits are not among the elements that highlight great working environments or workgroups. Apparently, employees prefer a positive environment more than material benefits. Seppala and Cameron (2015) note that today, while employees will welcome benefits like flexible time and higher pay, they prefer workplaces that maintain their wellbeing.
The Gallup results and the opinions presented by McNamara appear to coincide in their core elements. In both articles, the need for organizational culture is highlighted. The management must assess and emphasize the crucial or important elements within the organization. Are growth and development crucial? Is employee engagement crucial? What behaviors stand out? These are the crucial questions that the management needs to consider. Both articles appear to agree on the need to establish an organizational culture specific to an organization.

One thing that the articles reveal that is dissimilar to my organization is the need to focus on pay and benefits. In many organizations, pay and benefits happen to be considered crucial elements of motivation.
