Strategic management is the process through which the management of an organization directs the resources of the organization towards the achievement of the organization's goals. The organization must, therefore, be clear as to what its goals are. The organization thus identifies the resources necessary for the fulfillment of its goals and allocates them optimally. The importance of strategic management cannot be overemphasized. The paper will, therefore, discuss its importance to managers and the essence of setting hierarchical goals.
Strategic management is critical to managers in its contribution to achieving organizational goals. Strategic management provides the mechanism through which the organization can achieve its goals optimally. This is crucial in the 21st-century corporate landscape. Where, managers are increasingly under pressure to perform with limited resources at their disposal. Strategic management allows them to identify the necessary resources. It hence, allows managers to deploy these resources in a manner that ensures maximum returns despite minimal resources.
Strategic management allows managers to ensure their organizations remain competitive in the market. The efficient utilization of resources means that fewer resources are used in achieving organizational goals. This can be transferred to the consumer of the organization’s products and services through lower costs. As such, the organization attracts more clients who are price conscious. The manager, through strategic management, ensures that the organization can compete and thrive in the market.
Strategic management allows managers to communicate effectively with the organization staff. Staff need to understand and appreciate the organization’s goals if they are to contribute meaningfully to the organization. Managers can, therefore, develop better relationships with employees. This means that employee turnover will be low. Thus lowering recruitment costs. Employee morale will be high, which means employees will be more productive and engaged in their work. Hierarchical Goals.
Goals refer to a future state or stage that an organization aims to attain. There are long and short term goals, being differentiated by the amount of time it takes to realize them. Goals provide a company or an organization with a clear target which it ought to achieve. The organization can, therefore, plan, direct and drive its resources towards the attainment of the goal.
Hierarchical goals are the organizational goals that are cascaded upwards in a stage by stage format. The organization must realize lower hierarchy goals to achieve higher goals. The hierarchy would typically consist of; meeting operating costs, strong financial position, becoming and maintaining a competitive advantage relative to its peers and ultimately developing a renowned brand image.
