Most people fear to speak in public. In case of any event, someone feels they are better off he or she take another task rather than addressing a congregation. In Criminal Justice, there are numerous occasions where a person has to speak to an audience concerning some issues. Policy issues and its efficacy is a main area of address. Like many other people, I have often faced the fear of public speaking.
According to Bodie (2010), Public speaking anxiety is a form of social anxiety. It emanates from the fear of evaluations that are not satisfactorily. There are various forms of public speaking anxiety such as speech anxiety, speech fear, political speech fright, performance anxiety, and audience anxiety. I usually suffer from two kinds of anxiety, audience anxiety, and anticipatory fear. Before, I give an address; my worry is on the kind of performance I will make on a particular day. It comes with a lot of emotional arousals. I keep on trying to fix my notes to ensure perfection in the final draft. I use commonly used words so that I might not sound strange to a group that understands less on a subject. Audience anxiety arises from one speech I gave and receive very demeaning feedback. Since then, I always experience some fright wondering what an audience shall make out of my speech. It leads me into researching severally into an audience expectation and culture before any speech delivery. I do try to present myself officially whenever addressing an audience.
